welcome back!
and i say that to myself, not to my dear readers. gosh, writing has been difficult. i make no excuses nor do i offer any more lame attempts at an explanation. i have not been active in my blogging, and for that i apologize.
but i am here now, so now we blog.
i have a header on my blog called "semi-organic" life. this may come as a shock, but i do not post much there. due to how much i blog, i know this is truly mind blowing. i want to post more about that topic, but part of me holds back, mostly in fear. i don't want to appear to shove my lifestyle down your throat. i don't want to suggest that my lifestyle choices are better than yours. and i don't want to come off as a self proclaimed expert.
i want to share my lifestyle because it has been so successful to me. my goal in sharing is that anyone can take away any of the pieces from it. if you struggle with a workout plan, maybe what i do will help you find motivation. if you find that shopping for organic foods is overwhelming and expensive, maybe my tips could help.
i simply want to share because i believe in what i [we] do for our lives. i am not selling anything. i get no incentives by sharing my journey. but i am passionate about it. and i think that is a good starting point when it comes to sharing, writing, and blogging.
since spring is in the air, i want to touch on my workout regimen. we gotta work on those beach bodies! i feel that adopting a workout plan is easier than changing your diet. HEAR ME OUT. most people, when they decide they are ready to start a new workout plan, already have a general idea of what they want to do. or at the very least, what they are not willing to do. when it comes to food, eating healthy is so damn difficult. that is because the FDA doesn't give a shit about you. they just care about who is sending them paychecks [i.e., monsanto]. so when you make the decision to change your diet, you may think you've made good choices, but who knows, that granola bar could still be complete crap and full of sugar. you could still be filling your body with garbage. knowing what food is healthy, especially food from a box, is like solving a murder mystery. it really is ridiculous.
ok, i've gotten a bit sidetracked.
my workout regimen has been a very active part of my life for almost three years. i mostly do HIIT [high intensity interval training]. i like to include walking, running, and biking too. HIIT combines strength training + cardio in one workout. pretty great, huh? so you are not spending two hours at the gym trying to lift weights and get that treadmill time in. i can reap the benefits from a workout as short at 12 minutes [!!!!]. since it is interval training, i complete the workout in a continuous cycle of REST:WORK. the intervals just changes depending on the nature of the workout.
sample intervals:
10 sec rest, 50 sec work - repeat 12 times [total of 12 minutes]
15 sec rest, 45 sec work - repeat 12 times [total of 12 minutes]
sample exercises:
pushups
squats
tuck jumps
burpees
clean + press
lunge
row
bike abs
if you have ever heard of beachbody, insanity, 21-day fix, shaun T, P90X - all of those are based on HIIT. keith and i did insanity several times.
currently, i utilize bodyrock.tv [it's free]. they do offer add-on programs and equipment you can buy. however, the core programs are always free.
and if i want to change or manipulate anything, i do. i make it work for me.
it can be difficult to articulate what exactly HIIT is to someone who has never done it. you can start from scratch. you don't have to be in shape to do it [that is the point of exercise, right?]. i've had friends/family look at some of the stuff i do and say, "oh, i could never do that." well, i didn't use to be able to do that either. BUT NOW I CAN.
HIIT will teach you to move your body in ways you never expected nor thought you could. i encourage you to try it. what i love about it is, on days when i lack motivation, i always tell myself, "i can find 12 minutes, right?" or "i can make it through just 12 minutes...i got this." and once those 12 minutes are over, i almost always want to do more.

a new year, a new you!
it's january!
that means it's time to get right. there are new workout plans. new fad diets. new, crazy "lose weight fast" plans. i've gotten plenty of fliers requesting me to join their gym for a nominal fee. i've also seen plenty of "runners" out on the street. and don't forget about those weight watches and jenny craig commericals.
i am happy for anyone who wants to make their body right. but it's hard work. it's a commitment and a lifestyle change. there is nothing "fast" about it. i've been doing what i've been doing for almost two years now and i still tweak it and change it to keep improving myself.
i have no huge goals for january or this year, other than to keep kicking ass [pretty great goal, eh?]. although, here are a few things i will be working on.
my strict workout plan:
i still do bodyrock.tv everyday. currently they are doing "HIITMAX" each day they post a video that is at least 12 minutes long. you start with workout 1 on monday. then on tuesday you will do workout 1 again and add the new video, workout 2. then on wednesday you will do workout 1, workout 2, and add workout 3....and so on until friday. it's really tough. i haven't been able to complete all five videos at one time, if that tells you anything.
here is the link for the first HIITMAX: workout 1 [if you'd like to check it out]
that post will explain the format in greater detail.
here is a link for the current "season". each "season" is 4/5 weeks long.
HIITMAX - season 3: workout 51 [start with fit test] and workout 52
in addition, each month bodyrock posts a calendar challenge, such as situps and pushups, or burpees. each day [or week] it progressively gets harder/more intense. i never choose to do them. well, this month i am. it is a combination of burpees, pushups, squats, and skipping [jumping rope].
check it out here: dailyhiit blog - january "just go" challenge
food:
for the most part, i've always maintained a good eating regime. almost all homemade, organic, and clean diet. this month i want to eat as clean as possible. that means packaged foods. no pretzels, no tortilla chips. no beer [gasp!]. no eating out [although, we have a few farm-to-table restaurants that i could probably eat at].
the few things i kept: vanilla yogurt, whole milk, and coffee.
it takes a lot of planning to make sure there is enough food to feed this hungry face. especially when it all must be made from scratch. ALL OF IT. but it's fun to create new recipes and things to eat.
other thoughts...
i want to challenge myself more physically. so we will be looking to sign up for more 5k races, even if they are silly in nature. the first race? hopefully cupid's undie run in raleigh. and no, i am not kidding.
we also are going to join the gym [yes, even after i made the smart ass gym comment]. that probably won't happen for a couple of months due to other life events. we want to make sure we are using what we are paying for. so my best guess is april. we want to be a part of the gym for access to more things - variety of cardio machines, weights, classes, racquet ball, indoor pool, outdoor equipment [kayaks!]. this will also amp up our exercise regime and performance.
whew. that's a lot for just january. i'll follow up in february. but so far, so good. :)
do you have diet/exercise goals for this year?

semi-organic life
so. i made a change to my "workout" tab. some of you may have noticed. some of you may not. the "workout" tab really wasn't doing it for me anymore. i write down my daily workouts on paper. so, for me to log-in and also document it here, well, you can see i was really failing at that. plus, i never really received any feedback on it. so i am going with the assumption no one really benefited from it being there.
BUT! i have been wanting to write more about our lifestyle. not to shove it in anyone's face, but because i enjoy it and it excites me. and anything that creates passion, is worth sharing. and by writing about it, we can talk about it and share ideas, thoughts, concerns...anything!
the tab above is entitled "semi-organic life" because that is exactly how we live. we eat as clean and organically as we can. but, for us, we know that it's not possible all the time. my exercise and wellness regime is a huge part of my lifestyle too. so that will filter in here as well. my thought is to put up a regular blog post, much like this one is, and then store all of the "semi-organic life" blogs under that tab. it will be a away of categorizing some of my blog posts. so, if you are interested in just our lifestyle blogs, you can gain access to them all in one place instead of having to sift through everything.
so, what will i write about in "semi-organic life"?

Healthy LIFE
my fitness journey started almost a year ago. april 8, 2013 to be exact. how am i able to remember the exact date? it was keith's first day of his then new job. prior to us moving out to greenville i had fallen off the fitness wagon. the stress of moving, packing and finding a place to live trumped keeping up with my workout regime. once we moved and got settled in, i figured we had this new life, so it would be a great time to start over with a new me.
april 8, 2013
i started off with 10 minutes a day. it's all i could find motivation for. i would do pieces of my insanity videos. some strengthening and core. it probably took me two months to make it a routine. two months of light workouts to make it an essential part of my day. but then i realized, "hey i don't have a job. i need to maximize all the free time available to me." i started working out anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours a day. during this time my workouts consisted of any combination of cross fit, dailyhiit, and insanity. no wonder i could workout for 2 hours! i decided i would make working out my life...until i found a job.
well, august 2013, i found a job. and guess what? working out is still every bit as much a part of my life. because i had spent 4 months working so hard to get in shape and lose weight, i wasn't going to stop now. there were still goals to reach. i want to be strong and look strong. i want a six pack. i want to feel confident in my body. so, i still workout.
in december, keith and i ran a 5k. it was a fun run. but it was nice to be able to go out for a 3 mile run and feel fucking awesome. plus, it has motivated me to want to run more. just another type of exercise for me to add to my regime.
the long winter months got tough. motivation wore thin. being inside and frigid cold for 3 months made exercise challenging. it was difficult some days to convince myself to change out of warm, cozy clothes into my workout clothes. but i knew if i didn't workout...that would feel worse. so, as hard as winter was...we plowed through it.
and now, april 2014, one year later. my motivation soars. a day without a workout feels awful. i haven't quiet figured out how to have an active rest day. i know my body needs rest and i do my best to listen to it. i don't have a weekly schedule. i just go with what feels right for that day. i try to workout between 4-6 days in a row before taking a day off. some days are more intense than others. some days are long workouts. some days are short. every day i try to give it everything i've got.
in october i posted my measurements before i started the bodyrock.tv 30 day real time challenge [RTC]. i never shared with you my 'after' measurements. i will today. they are for me and for you. i am well beyond the 30 day RTC, but it always great to review your progress. i am not a believer in checking in everyday as i feel that can be discouraging if you don't see results 'fast enough' or 'high enough' or 'large enough'. i think it is more important that you are comfortable in your clothes than what the scale says. i'm not much for sharing before and after photos, so this will have to do ;)
i lost about 2 inches almost everywhere [wow! awesome!!]. i fully expected to gain inches in my arms and legs due to gaining muscle. so i am kind of surprised that my thighs lost so much. i should check my measurements again in another 3-4 months to note any additional changes.
it's been a year since i began this journey and i am in the best shape of my life. i am still searching for those 6-pack abs. but i think about it, true peak fitness is difficult to achieve. think of ALL the years of junk food and alcohol and couch surfing i have done [more than i care to discuss]. i have given my body some bad stuff. toxic stuff. we all have. so, to erase all of that, to get rid of fat and build muscle, well that is going to take a long time too. and i am in it for the long haul.
and to have a healthy body isn't just all about exercise. i could workout as hard as i wanted to every single day, but if feed my body crap, all my efforts will be rendered useless. abs are made in the kitchen. your diet has to be as great as your workout plan. ask anyone close to me, and they'll tell you that i am kind of ridiculous about what is in my food. when it comes to your food choices, less is more. lisa, [the bodyrock.tv host that i LOVE], suggested doing a 1-ingredient challenge. so basically you only eat foods that have one ingredient [apples, chicken, lettuce, bananas, rolled oats]. you, of course, can combine 1-ingredient items to other 1-ingredient items [ex: apples, bananas and milk to make a smoothie]. i love this idea. it's tough, but it will tune you into what you really should be eating.
so, by being physically fit and maintaining a healthy diet, it quickly spills over into other aspects of my life. i sleep better. not that i ever had trouble sleeping, but now i feel like i have a deeper, more meaningful sleep. i am less stressed. again, not that ever feel stressed, but by feeling healthy, the little things in life that i might have worried about, don't seem to wrinkle my feathers as much. i am happier. i am, by nature a happy person, so my being healthier has had an exponentially positive effect on my happiness.
when you feel good about yourself, inside and out, it will transfer to the rest of your life. just the same as if you felt poorly about yourself. that is why the saying goes, "love yourself first...". it's so true. there is only one YOU. love it and care for it the best way that you can.
now that i finally feel "in shape", it is sometimes hard to stay motivated. it's like, "ok, now what?" but i constantly remind myself that getting into shape was just the beginning. staying in shape and staying healthy for the rest of my life. but in order to do that i have to keep goals. for now, i have pretty basic goals. eventually i'd like to take my fitness level to a more competitive nature.
my healthy goals for this year?
run 2-3 5ks [and hopefully an 8k]. try to find another sport to get involved in [biking or kayaking...maybe]. find more local foods to eat. continue to make as much food/meals as we can from scratch.
i can't really put into words how amazing this journey has been. a healthy lifestyle is just that for me...my life. any other choice is now no longer an option.
except for cupcakes. ;)

30 day | real time challenge
i share as much as i can [without being too lengthy and boring] about my workouts in an effort to hold myself accountable and to hopefully provide motivation to others.
one of the workout plans i follow, dailyhiit, has a sister site, bodyrock.tv. through bodyrock.tv, they are providing an 30 day challenge. this challenge is offered on their website for FREE. each day they will post the workout video, in what they call "real time". which means it is the video in its entirety. typically, if an exercise program or video is offered online it is either only part of the workout or you must pay for what you want to access. so, what they are offering to their workout community is HUGE!
so, if you are looking for a new workout routine or if you need motivation, i encourage to try the 30 day | real time challenge. it requires almost no planning on your part. i would recommend looking at the website/blog post prior to your workout to see what equipment you may need [typical weight lifting equipment].
the challenge started yesterday, but is designed for you to go at your own pace. so do not fret if you are getting a late start [i did]! plus, they have put a TON of information on their websites and facebook pages in order to prepare you for the challenge.
i just did day 1 today. it was 40 minutes long. it didn't feel like 40 minutes, but it was tough.
lisa [who is the trainer] also in encourages you to take measurements before and after the challenge. not weigh-ins. you know why? because muscle weighs more than fat. and she is going to build you some awesome muscle! so you just may gain a little weight! also because she says how you feel in your clothes is true motivation, not what the scale says.
so, here are my before measurements, all in inches [eeepp]
weight: 127lbs [luckily i went to the doctor yesterday, otherwise i'd have no idea].
bust: 34
chest: 29.5
waist: 28
hips: 35.5
right thigh: 21
left thigh: 21.5
left arm: 11.5
right arm: 11.5
as lisa also suggests, i will tuck this away [in the world of the internet for all to see] for the next 30 days. i will not look at it again for the next 30 days until i share with you my measurements after the challenge.
here are some links to get you started:

my sweet husband and i exercise. a lot. we hold each other accountable and talk about our workouts, struggles and successes. tonight he had this really great idea. he suggested that it would be even more motivating to share our daily exercise regime through social media outlets. this would allow for friends and family chime in with their workouts, suggestions, ideas, questions, successes and struggles too. it could create an online forum for exercise motivation.
i think it is a wonderful idea. so, i thought i would take to my blog to open up this thread. i will add an exercise tab to my blog [that you can access here] that will simply be an on-going list of my daily workouts. within that tab you will have the opportunity to leave comments about my workouts and talk about your own workouts. each day that i add to it, i will share the link so that you know it is updated.
hopefully this will be helpful, not only for our continued success, but yours too!
now lets get our workout on.
xoxo,
ks

we're insane.
seriously.
so i haven't updated you all recently on my new year's resolutions recently. did you think i'd forget?! noooo....
well, the most important resolution, "to get right", has proven to be quite a struggle for us.
until now.
so the gym was nice. but it wasn't cutting it for us. it was not very motivating. and not producing the results we wanted. and if we didn't go...who cared. our eating habits were good, but could always be better especially on the weekends when all hell seemed to break loose.
so we decided to do INSANITY.
what's that you ask? the most craziest, hardest, sweatiest, INSANE workout you've ever done.

so we decided to do INSANITY.
what's that you ask? the most craziest, hardest, sweatiest, INSANE workout you've ever done.
it's a 60-day workout plan that is based on plyometrics and cardio. it also comes with the suggested workout schedule and an nutrition guide. both of which we've been following.
we just completed day 11.
in addition to completing absolutely insane workouts everyday, we are now very aware of how much we should eat every day. we count calories. we eat 5 small meals per day. we have removed all processed foods from our diet (not that we had much in our diet to begin with). we eat A LOT of fruits and veggies. we drink a shit ton of water. i pee more than i ever have in my life.
and even though it's only been a week and a half, we've noticed a difference. we've lost a little bit of weight. our muscles are starting to get more toned. we are sleeping better. not that we ever had problems sleeping before, but now we PASS THE HELL OUT.
and most importantly, we have more energy and overall feel better. we feel healthier and are striving to stay that way.
sure we want a mcdonald's big mac every now and again. and we know that it will taste soooo delicious. but we also know that afterward we will feel guilty and probably physically feel bad because our bodies aren't used to eating junk. and eating junk doesn't help to fuel us for our workouts!
and i think that is another piece of it. we want to feel good to workout. so everything we eat and drink goes to preparing our bodies for our VERY INTENSE workouts. and i guarantee you a big mac will not prepare us very well to get insane.
so, as of today, day 11, on this new venture we are having a great time. and enjoy the challenge, because it is a challenge. we are excited to get in shape and to get sexy ;)
i'll keep you posted as we continue. hopefully it continues to go well!
plus, we got our friend dan to do this with us!! and a few of my facebook friends are getting INSANE too! so we'll all be slim and sexy in a couple of months. so watch out!

ks

the workout has begun...sort of.
as mentioned in my last blog, i said am going to start working out again. and i'd blog about it. until i fall of the wagon...............
well, yesterday was day numero uno. as usual the workout didn't get done during it's scheduled time. that is why on so many days...i simply don't workout. it's like "ohhh, i've got too much going on, i'm tired now...i'd rather watch tv and eat ice cream. ahh screw working out. i'll do it tomorrow." tomorrow comes and goes. a similar excuse is always in the mix. and so the cycle continues.
BUT! yesterday, even though i was busy and tired and would have rather had ice cream, i worked out! it wasn't for as long as i desired or needed, but hey, a little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing. so i did a medium-intensity bike ride for 20 minutes. because let's be honest, i am not in shape for any kind of high-intensity workouts...yet.
and i was proud of myself for squishing it into my schedule. it makes me that much more motivated to do the same the next time i feel pressed for time.
yet it was kind of silly of me to begin a new workout regime on a monday because tuesdays are my rest day. why? you ask. because i have a 12-hour day between being at work and in class. there simply is no time for working out. so, i got myself all jazzed up and excited about working out......to have to wait until tomorrow.
let's just hope all motivation is not lost.

the favorite, materialistic superfan
i've got some thoughts. rants. comments. none of these go together, but i didn't feel that they each were worthy of their own blog. plus they are all thoughts of mine right now. sooo, why not share all of them with you at once?!
first, the "superfan" annoys me. what do i mean by superfan? it's the fan that cheers for every team. of every sport. how can you love every team? every day of the week? do you just feel the need to have a team to cheer for? i just don't understand it. how can you always have yet another team that you want to win?
i have 3 to 5 teams i cheer for. but really just three. and the top three are not related to each other. so, that means i have ONE team for a particular sport. case in point: i am a carolina hurricanes fan. an ECU pirates fan. and i am a cowboys fan.
i don't like any other NFL team for any other reason. not because of my fiance. or my best friend. or that tom brady looks sexy this week. i have a slight interest in the chargers because of philip rivers. and is because he went to NC state. and i went to state. which is another one of my sort of teams. i have kind of abandoned NC state since i've moved on. pirates!! arrrgghhh.
so you see, really it's just three. the other two hardly count. and if they play either the pirates or the cowboys, then that is who i am cheering for.
materialism. this annoys me. i probably don't even need to say another thing about it. you all know what it means. you can take it or leave it on if you agree. i just hate how people start to act differently when "stuff" starts to define them.
i am tired of worrying about how my success or failures effects other people. or if they don't effect anyone. it's my life and i'll live it how i see fit. again, you can take it or leave it. i know i have awesome people around me who are always going to take it...and that is enough for me.
favoritism. it has it's place. i have my favorite kind of ice cream (chocolate chip cookie dough) and my favorite TV show to fall asleep to (friends). but there are places where favoritism can be a bit misplaced. mostly when it comes to relationships. work. family. even pets. it's especially difficult on the one who is not favored. i understand that certain people may be favored for whatever reason...better hair, make-up, clothes. but when it comes to loved ones and important relationships, is having a favorite really that important? can't you just enjoy or love the people in your life for their differences and what separates them; what makes them unique? versus using that as a reason for making one better than the other. i see this around me and it really hurts my heart. because everyone involved in the relationship brings amazing things to it. unfortunately those blinded by "the favorite" will never get to see it.
i am going to start working out again this week. i'll keep you posted on my progress. i figured if i blog about it, maybe that will help keep me accountable. or if things don't go well, maybe i just won't blog about it ;o)
that's all for now! thanks for listening!
